Matthew D. Hurbanis, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with the Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute. He specializes in joint replacement, arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery, Mako® Robotic Arm Assisted Surgery, and sports medicine.

Joint Replacement

Patients who suffer from arthritis, severe fractures or failed joint replacement surgery will benefit from Dr. Hurbanis’ experience with joint replacement. After evaluating each patient’s condition, together they determine if total joint replacement is necessary for an improved quality of life. If so, he is prepared to perform hip, shoulder or revision joint replacement and hip resurfacing.

Arthroscopic and Reconstructive Surgery

With today’s advanced surgical techniques and technology, Dr. Hurbanis helps his patients achieve the best outcomes possible for their condition through arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. Details include:

  • Arthroscopic surgery is less invasive than traditional surgery and involves inserting tiny surgical instruments through small incisions to repair or remove damaged areas of the hip or knee. Typically this results in less pain and faster healing.
  • Reconstructive surgery is often an effective treatment for repairing damaged joints and restoring function for patients suffering from severe forms of arthritis and experiencing pain, joint deformity and mobility issues.

Mako® Robotic Arm Assisted Surgery

Dr. Hurbanis uses Mako® Robotic Arm Assisted Surgery for both total hip arthroplasty and partial knee resurfacing. This is a precise, breakthrough solution for those with debilitating pain of the knee or hip. Mako® Robotic Arm Assisted Surgery enables Dr. Hurbanis to treat patient-specific knee and hip conditions to help them return them to wellness.

Sports Medicine

Dr. Hurbanis also is fellowship trained in comprehensive sports medicine care and treats amateur and professional athletes throughout Central Florida. With the clinic’s advanced treatment and rehabilitation options, injured athletes typically return to their active lifestyle quickly and safely.

Dr. Hurbanis’ Training

Dr. Hurbanis earned his medical and undergraduate degrees from the University of Florida and then completed his internship and a residency in orthopedic surgery at Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he was chief resident. He then completed a fellowship in arthroscopy and sports medicine at the University of Cincinnati’s Bone and Joint Institute. Here he served as associate team physician to the Cincinnati Bengals, University of Cincinnati, and the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks hockey team.

About Dr. Hurbanis

As an undergraduate, Dr. Hurbanis played football on an academic scholarship at the University of Florida (UF) under Coach Steve Spurrier. He decided to pursue medicine as a career because of the orthopedic physicians who saw him through injuries and surgeries during his time on the field.

While at UF, he was recognized for many achievements, including lettering in football and being selected for the South Eastern Conference All-Academic Team.

Dr. Hurbanis is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and a member several professional organizations such as the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.
